Half of Royal Greenwich households live in flats, so carpet cleaning in Greenwich covers rugs and sofas in new blocks as often as stairs in old terraces. A bedroom carpet is £36 and a two-seat sofa £57.

Royal Greenwich has homes from every period. Of the 125,060 homes the Valuation Office Agency counted here in March 2025, just over a fifth are older than 1919, about one in six is interwar, nearly a fifth went up in the post-war decades to 1972, and over a quarter date from 2000 or later. The 2021 Census shows 51.5% of households in flats, the large majority in blocks built as flats, and 26.7% in terraced houses. A Georgian house on Crooms Hill and a new flat by the Creek need quite different visits from a carpet cleaner.

Old terraces and new blocks in Royal Greenwich

The older houses are carpet jobs in the traditional sense: hall, stairs at £41 a flight, landing, then bedrooms at £36 each. A Victorian house divided into two flats often has a long run of stairs up to the upper front door, which counts as a flight of its own. Newer blocks bring a different job. A recently built home more often has wood or laminate in the living space with rugs on top, and carpet only in the bedrooms. Each rug stays on the floor for cleaning; smaller ones up to 3 square metres are £35 and anything bigger £51, and rug cleaning describes how the fibre and dyes are checked. If the boards or tiles around the rug need attention too, the hard floor cleaning page lists the rate per square metre. Machines come up by lift or by the stairwell, so tell us which floor you are on and whether the block has a lift.

Landlord licensing in Royal Greenwich

Private tenants make up 25.5% of Greenwich households and social tenants 31%. The council licenses private lets under two local schemes. Its selective scheme for single-household lets runs from 1 October 2022 until the same date in 2027 and applies to five wards on their pre-2022 boundaries: Woolwich Riverside, Woolwich Common, Shooters Hill and the two Plumstead wards. Separately, every house or flat in the borough shared by three or more people from different households falls under additional HMO licensing between January 2024 and December 2028. The council has also consulted on a larger selective scheme covering 18 wards, and Cabinet is due to decide on it late in 2026. A licence does not change how a carpet is cleaned. What changes is the rhythm: lets turn over, and the carpets get done at each turnover. When the carpets go on the same booking as an end of tenancy clean, each bedroom is £29 and the lounge £36.

Parking permits for a carpet cleaner in Greenwich

The borough’s directory lists 30 controlled zones, and some of them keep their controls on Sundays. Visitor vouchers come as whole-day or half-day sessions, and a carpet clean in a small flat may fit inside a half day. There is also a weekly tradesperson permit for work at a home, though for a few hours of carpet cleaning a visitor session is usually simpler. Take the town centre zone (G): controls apply from 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and until 6pm on Sundays, and a household can use up to 200 visitor sessions in a year. With no voucher to hand, the cleaner parks in a paid bay and you are charged what was spent, to a limit of £40.

Carpet cleaning in Greenwich

Few conservation areas in England are older than West Greenwich, designated in March 1968. Its appraisal points to the Georgian houses on Hyde Vale and Crooms Hill, where an early Georgian terrace of 1721 starts the street. Houses of that period are often tall, and carpet cleaning in one can mean several flights of stairs at £41 each, with landings at £9. The Ashburnham Triangle was built mainly from 1830 to 1870 on former market gardens and is protected today as a conservation area, with Article 4 controls as well. There is new housing as well: the council’s regeneration list includes 636 homes at New Capital Quay and 249 at Creekside East, and across the Greenwich Park, Greenwich Creekside and East Greenwich wards 71.9% of households live in flats. Plan the parking. Zone EG in East Greenwich has controls from 9am to 6.30pm on every day of the week, Sunday included, so the cleaner needs a visitor session or a paid bay whatever day you book.

Carpet cleaning in Woolwich

Woolwich is being rebuilt on two fronts. Along the river, the old munitions works of the Royal Arsenal, 36 hectares in all, is planned to reach more than 5,000 homes by 2030; the council puts the number already built at over 3,500, and 23 listed buildings on the site have been restored. Elsewhere, the Connaught, Morris Walk and Maryon Road and Maryon Grove estates are being replaced by over 1,500 new homes, and the Connaught site, cleared in 2016, is being rebuilt as Trinity Walk. Three households in four in the Woolwich wards live in a flat, and a third rent privately. For carpet cleaning that means frequent changeovers in newer flats: bedroom carpets, a sofa and a mattress. A mattress is £35, and mattress cleaning covers the marks that usually lift and the ones that stay. Central Woolwich is in the selective licensing area. In zone WA the controls run from 8.30am until 6.30pm on all seven days, so sort out a visitor session before the cleaner arrives.

Carpet cleaning in Eltham

During the First World War the Office of Works needed homes for Woolwich Arsenal’s munitions workers fast, and the Progress Estate at Well Hall was finished in about ten months in 1915: a garden suburb of two-storey houses designed to look like cottages. The estate was made a conservation area in 1971. Two years later an Article 4 direction removed most owners’ rights to change the outside of their house without permission. Inside, the cottages have modest rooms and a single staircase, so carpet cleaning there runs at the standard room prices, with any box room at £29. Terraces make up 30.3% of households across the four Eltham wards, slightly more than flats. Fabric armchairs are £33 each and dining chairs £13, both covered under armchair and dining chair cleaning. For parking, the Eltham Centre zone (EC) has controls from 9am to 5.30pm except on Sundays. The High Street’s rebuild from 2016 brought wider pavements and a 20mph limit, so stopping right outside a flat above a shop may be harder than it once was.

Carpet cleaning in Charlton

Charlton’s two wards hold a high share of terraced homes (32.3% of households) alongside flats at 46%, and 38.9% of households rent from a council or housing association. Two conservation areas take in the old village and Rectory Field, and Rectory Field is one of six places in the borough under an Article 4 direction. Those controls deal with the outside of a house and have no bearing on cleaning inside it. A Charlton terrace usually means a staircase, so the stairs and landing go on the list with the bedrooms. Leather sofas are priced on a call, once the cleaner knows whether the hide is aniline, semi-aniline, pigmented or suede; leather and suede sofa cleaning explains why the type matters. Zone C covers Monday to Saturday from 9am to 6.30pm. The council sells half-day visitor sessions there at about half the whole-day price, and one of those may suit carpet cleaning in a one-bedroom flat.

Carpet cleaning in Plumstead

Terraced houses hold 44.6% of households in Plumstead’s two wards, a higher share than in any other area on this page. Many were built in a rush during the 1880s to house Royal Arsenal workers, the smallest of them two rooms up and two down close to the river, with larger houses higher up around Plumstead Common, which is now a conservation area. A two-up, two-down is simple to price. Each bedroom is £36 and the stairs £41. Downstairs, two separate rooms are a living room and a small room, or, if the wall between them has gone, one through lounge at £61. The old Plumstead Common and Plumstead Glyndon wards are inside the selective licensing area, and 27.6% of households rent privately, so carpet cleaning between tenancies comes up often here. Plumstead Central (PC) is a six-day zone, with controls from 9am to 5.30pm.

Carpet cleaning in Greenwich Peninsula

Much of the peninsula is new. Europe’s largest gasworks once covered these 150 acres, and a partnership of the GLA’s land company with Knight Dragon now plans as many as 17,487 homes there. The GLA records 3,479 completed, 37% affordable, set around a 4.9-hectare park, with heating supplied by one network for the whole site. Next door, Greenwich Millennium Village has about 2,004 homes, built to a masterplan by Ralph Erskine that won a 1997 competition. In the ward, 87% of households live in flats. Carpet cleaning here is mostly bedroom carpets, rugs on hard floors and fabric sofas, and with the heating on they dry in a few hours. None of the borough’s 30 parking zones carries the peninsula’s name; East Greenwich is the nearest one that does. Ask your building how visitors park, whether in a bay, a loading area or a car park, and tell us when you book.

Carpet cleaning in Thamesmead

Thamesmead was planned around water. The GLC began it in the late 1960s on old marshland, mainly as social housing, and because the area had flooded in 1953 the first designs raised living rooms to the first floor or above, joined blocks with walkways in the air and kept ground floors for garages. In many of the older town houses, then, carpet cleaning starts with a staircase from the front door up to the main rooms, and the machines go up it too. Before 1974 the town was built as modernist town houses and concrete system-built blocks of medium height or 12 storeys; later homes are mostly brick. The district heating was shut down around 2000, and the homes it served were given their own radiators, which is good news for drying: switch them on after the clean. Peabody took over the estate’s landlords in 2014. The council’s zone list has nothing named for Thamesmead, the closest names being Abbey Wood and Abbey Wood Outer.

Questions about carpet cleaning in Greenwich

Should I get a visitor voucher or a tradesperson permit for the cleaner in Greenwich?

A visitor voucher, in most cases. Royal Greenwich sells visitor sessions by the whole day or the half day, and a carpet clean lasts a few hours, so one session from your allowance is enough. The weekly tradesperson permit is meant for longer works at a home. Without either, the cleaner pays for a bay and passes on that cost, up to £40.

Can you clean carpets in a Progress Estate house under the Article 4 direction?

Yes. The Progress Estate’s Article 4 direction dates from 1973 and controls changes to the outside of the houses. Cleaning the carpets, a sofa or curtains inside the house is not a change to the building, so no permission comes into it.

Do you clean wool rugs on wooden floors in Peninsula flats?

Yes, in the flat, with the rug left on the floor. The cleaner checks the dyes before starting, cleans the rug with hot water extraction and leaves it to dry flat, which goes faster with the heating on. Rugs of 3 square metres or less cost £35; above that the price is £51.

Thamesmead flats have the living room upstairs. Does that change the price?

No. Rooms are priced as rooms, whichever floor they are on, and a carpeted staircase inside the home is priced as a flight at £41. The only thing the layout changes is the carry, so tell us about any walkway or stairs between the parking and your front door.
