Carpet cleaning in Hackney takes in Victorian terraces in Stoke Newington and Clapton, post-war estates in Homerton and Hoxton and new flats in Shoreditch. Bedrooms are £36 each and a two-seat fabric sofa £57.
Hackney was built in bursts. On Valuation Office counts for March 2025, of the borough’s 120,680 homes about a third (34.9%) are older than 1919, a fifth (21.2%) went up between 1945 and 1972, and 23.3% are from 2000 or later; the years between the wars added only 7.8%. Each era leaves a different job. The Victorian terrace has a hall, stairs and landings before any bedroom. The post-war estate flat sits on one level, reached by a lift or a stairwell. The new flat often has hard floors, with the carpet confined to bedrooms and the rest of the soft work being rugs and a sofa.
Flats housed 80.9% of Hackney households when the 2021 Census was taken. Blocks built as flats accounted for 60.4%, divided or shared houses for 15.5%, and other conversions and rooms over shops for 5.0%. Social renting came first at 40.5%, split almost evenly between the council and housing associations; private tenants made up 32.2% and owner-occupiers 24.6%. Every one of those homes gets hot water extraction from a portable machine moved from room to room, and the carpet cleaning page sets out how it works.
Parking for a carpet cleaner in Hackney
Hackney’s lettered zones each keep their own hours, and the spread is wide. Around Hackney Central, Zone D runs on until 11pm on every day but Sunday, and North Shoreditch until midnight. Zone N, Homerton and Lower Clapton, starts early at 7.30am on weekdays. The Stamford Hill zones sit at the other end, with controls for just two hours before midday, Monday to Friday. Short stays are paid by RingGo, at a machine or over the counter at a PayPoint shop, with an hour as the shortest stay, and the hourly rate depends on the area and the car’s emissions.
Residents can give a visitor a one-day voucher, which has to be shown in the windscreen. There is also Hackney’s all-zone e-permit, open to anyone who wants one, a visiting tradesperson included, and valid for 12 months on up to three vehicles within set size limits. Neither one is accepted on a yellow line, on estate land or in a pay-and-display bay. Newer developments are car free, which means their residents cannot get street permits at all. However the cleaner ends up parking, you pay what the cleaner paid, to a ceiling of £40.
Licences for Hackney landlords
Two Hackney licensing schemes started on 1 May 2026 and last until 30 April 2031. Selective licensing covers lets to one household or two sharers in 17 wards, Hackney Central, Dalston, Stoke Newington, Homerton and both Clapton wards among them. Borough-wide, additional HMO licensing covers homes where three or four people from different households share; five or more such sharers need the mandatory licence instead. Hoxton West and Hoxton East & Shoreditch are outside the selective scheme.
Whichever licence a let needs, the carpets are normally cleaned in the empty days between tenants. On an end of tenancy clean, a bedroom carpet is billed at £29 and a living room at £36, cheaper because the cleaner is there anyway. In a house of sharers, the shared lounge and the stairs belong on the list as well as the bedrooms.
Carpet cleaning in Hackney Central
Almost half of Hackney Central ward’s households (48.1%) were social tenants in 2021, and most of those rented from housing associations (34.0%), with the council at 14.1%. Conservation areas cover parts of the old streets. Town Hall Square takes in the listed Town Hall and the Hackney Empire, and Graham Road and Mapledene, the borough’s largest, is mostly housing of the early to mid 1800s, with some Georgian houses on Dalston Lane. On the Narroway and Lower Clapton Road, 19th century houses had shopfronts added later, so a flat there may sit over a shop and start with a narrow stair from the street. Behind them are smaller late Victorian terraces such as Gould Terrace and Kenmure Road.
Zone D has some of the longest hours in Hackney, from 8.30am until 11pm, Monday to Saturday, while streets signed as Zone D var stop at 6.30pm. For carpet cleaning on a Zone D street, a Sunday booking needs no voucher. The ward is in the selective licensing scheme, so most private lets need a licence.
Carpet cleaning in Dalston
Dalston rents. Private tenants made up 43.0% of the ward’s households in 2021, well above the borough figure, and a lot of homes have been made out of older buildings: converted or shared houses held 21.5% of households and other conversions 7.2%. Kingsland High Street, the spine of the Dalston conservation area designated in July 2016, is a shopping street of mainly Victorian and Edwardian buildings. The St Mark’s conservation area is a planned estate of villas and houses from the 1860s, where an Article 4 direction of 2008 brings changes to windows, doors, railings and outside paint under planning control.
The area mixes new and old, with 33.9% of homes from 2000 onwards and 42.9% older than 1919 on Valuation Office counts. A rented flat between tenants is the common carpet cleaning job, and a leather sofa sometimes comes with it. Leather and suede cleaning is quoted by phone after we hear what the hide is: aniline, semi-aniline, pigmented, suede or nubuck. Zone C, which covers Dalston, takes in Saturdays as well, with the same 8.30am start and 6.30pm finish.
Carpet cleaning in Stoke Newington
Stoke Newington is Hackney’s terrace district. Across Stoke Newington and Clissold wards, terraced houses held 24.3% of households at the 2021 Census and converted or shared houses 22.9%, (the Hackney figures are 13.9% and 15.5%), and owners were 36.9%. Some very old houses are here: numbers 107 to 117 Church Street go back to around 1700, by the council’s appraisal. After the railway opened in 1872, the old mansions were pulled down to make room for small terraces, Kerswell Road and Defoe Road among them. A small terrace like those can be two or three bedrooms over a hall and one flight, and the stair carpet is the most walked-on in the house.
Owners often finish the carpet cleaning with stain protection at £33 a room. Zone E has two sets of hours, so the sign in your street decides; Zone M, Clissold, runs weekdays and Saturday mornings and is extended on Emirates Stadium event days. Thames Water’s 2025 samples for its Hackney West zone gave a mean of 268 mg/l, inside its hard band.
Carpet cleaning in Shoreditch
Nearly every Shoreditch household lives in a flat. In 2021 the figure was 95.9%, with purpose-built blocks taking 83.5%, and old warehouses and other conversions 6.7%, and nearly half the homes (48.8%) date from 2000 or later. The furniture makers and printers of the mid to late 1800s shaped the South Shoreditch conservation area; the Hoxton Street one keeps a market street lined with buildings of three and four storeys, a few of them 18th century houses. Newer flats often have hard floors, so the soft furnishings tend to be a rug or two and the sofa. For rug cleaning, a rug up to 3 square metres costs £35 and anything larger £51, cleaned in place on the floor.
Parking is the hard part of carpet cleaning here. Zone B North keeps its controls going until midnight six days a week, from 8.30am. Zone B South covers the working day on weekdays and stops at 1.30pm on Saturdays. Short-stay bays in Zones A and B are in Hackney’s top price band, so a Sunday visit keeps the parking charge down. The ward is outside selective licensing.
Carpet cleaning in Hoxton
Hoxton West is estates and new building. Purpose-built blocks held 87.2% of the ward’s households in 2021, and on Valuation Office counts 35.3% of homes went up between 1945 and 1972 and 41.9% from 2000 on, against 8.1% from before 1919. Older fabric survives in pockets: the Underwood Street conservation area is a group of warehouses from about 1900 on tall, narrow streets, and the Pitfield Street conservation area of 2021 keeps Georgian and Victorian buildings in among big post-war estates. Along Hoxton’s northern edge runs the Regent’s Canal, a conservation area too.
In an estate flat, the visitor voucher and the e-permit do not work on estate land, so tell us where the cleaner can stop and which block and floor you are on. Where a Hoxton flat has carpet in the bedrooms and hall, a fabric sofa or armchairs can share the visit; upholstery cleaning starts with a check of the fabric. Zone F controls run on weekdays through the working day and on Saturday mornings until 1.30pm. Hoxton West is not a selective licensing ward, though homes shared by three or more people from two or more households need an HMO licence.
Carpet cleaning in Homerton
Of the Hackney areas on this page, Homerton has the biggest share of post-war homes: 39.2% date from 1945 to 1972 on Valuation Office counts. In 2021, 72.0% of households were in purpose-built blocks and 49.7% rented from a social landlord, 28.0% from the council directly. Newer council flats are arriving too. On Homerton High Street, the council’s regeneration of Bridge House and Marian Court has finished 115 council homes in five buildings, from Featherfew Court to Chervil House, with a last phase of 163 homes planned.
Plan the parking for an early start. Zone N, Homerton and Lower Clapton, begins its controls at 7.30am on weekdays, earlier than most zones, so a cleaner arriving at 8am needs a voucher or a paid bay from the outset; the bays near Homerton Hospital are in the borough’s lowest price band. The older streets include those of the Clapton Square conservation area, built round St John’s Church (1792 to 1797), and the Well Street conservation area of 2021, whose Victorian terraces are under an Article 4 direction. In a terrace, the stairs are £41 a flight.
Carpet cleaning in Clapton
Houses make up more of Clapton than of most of Hackney. Across Springfield and Lea Bridge wards in 2021, 20.5% of households had a terraced house, 5.0% a semi and 2.0% a detached house, and 35.4% rented privately. A semi or a detached house can have a through lounge, priced at £61, or a room too big for the room prices, measured at £3 a square metre. Three conservation areas are of note: Lea Bridge, along the River Lea and the old Lea Bridge Dock, taking in Millfields Recreation Ground; Clapton Pond, with the Bishopswood Almshouses and the grade II* Pond House; and Clapton Common, centred on the Georgian Clapton Terrace.
Springfield and Lea Bridge both fall inside selective licensing. A whole house let to a single family, or to two sharers, therefore needs a licence, and the changeover is when most landlords book carpet cleaning in Clapton. Upper Clapton is Zone U, with controls through the working day from Monday to Saturday, apart from its northern section, controlled for only two hours before midday on weekdays.
Carpet cleaning in Stamford Hill
Larger homes are more common in Stamford Hill. At the 2021 Census, a fifth of households in the two wards (20.7%) had at least four bedrooms; across Hackney the share was 12.0%. A four-bedroom house is a long list for carpet cleaning: four bedrooms at £36 each, a living room, the hall, a flight or two and the landings. Bedrooms usually mean mattresses too, and mattress cleaning at £35 each can be added for every bed in the house.
The Northwold and Cazenove conservation area, designated in September 2010, was almost all built from 1865 to 1895 on Tyssen-Amhurst land, as terraces of buff stock brick with painted details. Parking is easy by Hackney standards. Zones W, T and Y, Stamford Hill West, Stamford Hill and Stamford Hill East, are controlled only between 10am and midday on weekdays, so an afternoon start needs no voucher at all.
Questions about carpet cleaning in Hackney
Can the cleaner park on a Hackney visitor voucher?
Yes, in your zone’s permit bays. The one-day voucher has to be displayed in the windscreen, and it does not cover yellow lines, estate land or pay-and-display spaces. If you would rather not use one, a paid bay is used instead and its charge is added to your bill, capped at £40.
I live in a car-free development. Where does the cleaner park?
Hackney’s new homes and redevelopments come without street permits for their residents. The cleaner will normally use a paid short-stay bay nearby, which has a one-hour minimum, and the charge is passed on at cost up to £40. Tell us the nearest street when you book.
Which Hackney wards are in selective licensing?
Seventeen wards, among them Cazenove, Stamford Hill West, Springfield, Lea Bridge, Homerton, Clissold, Stoke Newington, Dalston and Hackney Central. The scheme lasts until 30 April 2031. Shoreditch and Hoxton wards are outside it, but homes shared by three or more people from two or more households need an HMO licence everywhere in Hackney.
Is a Sunday carpet clean easier to park for in Hackney?
Often. Zone D, Hackney Central and Dalston’s Zone C are controlled Monday to Saturday, so Sunday is outside their hours, and the Stamford Hill zones are controlled only on weekday mornings. We clean carpets 8am to 7pm, Sunday included.
