Carpet cleaning in Wandsworth is £36 a bedroom, £41 a full staircase and £35 for a rug no bigger than 3 square metres, each done by hot water extraction in your home.
Wandsworth has more staircases per street than its riverside towers suggest. Close to a third of its 137,392 households lived in a whole house at the 2021 Census: 22.2% in terraces, 7.0% in semis and 2.2% detached. Flats hold the other 68.5%, mostly in purpose-built blocks (48.1%) and houses that were divided up or are shared (17.7%). A carpet cleaning list here can be anything from a single rug on the oak floor of a new Nine Elms flat to a family house where the stairs and landing carry every trip up to bed.
The borough also looks after 46 conservation areas. Deodar Road is one on its own; Battersea Square keeps an old village centre; West Putney is large, and so is the Alton Estate, which protects a wide spread of council housing from the twentieth century. Age matters less to the cleaning than fibre does, so if you know the fibre, wool or synthetic, mention it when you call.
Stairs and landings in Wandsworth houses
In a two storey terrace the usual list starts at the front door: the hall at £22, one flight at £41, the landing at £9, then the bedrooms at £36 each. Stairs take more wear than any room in a family home with children or a dog, and each tread and riser is worked by hand with a small tool. A house with a loft conversion adds a second flight, or a short one at £29 if it is only a few steps.
People often search for steam cleaning. No steam goes into the carpet: hot water with a cleaning solution is pushed into the pile and the same machine sucks it back up, which is called hot water extraction (the steam carpet cleaning page has more). Expect the carpet to stay damp for a few hours; heating and an open window shorten that. Keep children and pets off the stairs until the treads feel dry underfoot.
Licensing and carpets in Wandsworth’s rented homes
In 2021, 36.3% of Wandsworth households rented from a private landlord, 19.3% were social tenants and 42.5% owned. The council’s additional licensing scheme took effect borough-wide on 1 July 2025 for any HMO that mandatory licensing misses, and it reaches shared flats too where the block holds three flats or more. It lasts until 30 June 2030. Selective licensing for single-household lets is decided ward by ward, and the questions at the end list the wards.
For a landlord or agent the practical issue is turnover. Booked with an end of tenancy clean, carpets come down to £29 per bedroom and £36 for the living room, because the cleaner is already at the property. A furnished shared flat tends to have a mattress in every bedroom (£35 each, see mattress cleaning) and one sofa that all the sharers use.
Trade permits and pay and display in Wandsworth
A carpet cleaner without a resident’s visitor permit has two choices in a controlled zone. Wandsworth sells trade permits by the day, paperless or as a scratch card, for all-day zones, plus a card that lasts five days; each is tied to a single vehicle and a single sub-zone and cannot be used in pay and display only bays, car parks or housing estates. The other route is pay and display, with an hourly rate that is higher close to town centres and lower in a handful of little-used streets, paid at the machine or through RingGo for an 18p fee. Every street sets its own hours and longest stay, and the signs decide. Whichever the cleaner uses is passed on at cost, with £40 as the ceiling.
Carpet cleaning in Battersea
In St Mary’s, Battersea Park and Shaftesbury & Queenstown wards, 69.5% of households are in purpose-built flats. Facing the park on Prince of Wales Drive stands a line of late Victorian mansion blocks about five storeys high; the seven main ones, Overstrand Mansions first, were complete by 1902. Zone B takes in that road and parts of Battersea Park Road, with controls seven days a week from 9am until 8pm and a four hour cap, and red route rules cover most of Battersea Park Road. A big mansion flat with sofas and armchairs as well as carpets can take several hours, so give us the whole list at booking. The Shaftesbury Park Estate is a different job. Its houses, built 1873 to 1877, are stock brick with Gothic touches and two storeys high, and Peabody now manages most of them. With two storeys there is one flight, so carpet cleaning in one of these houses is the hall, the stairs and the bedrooms, with the living room if it is carpeted. None of the three wards is in selective licensing.
Carpet cleaning in Clapham Junction
The three wards around the station differ sharply. Falconbrook, which holds Clapham Junction itself, is 86.3% flats, and 45.1% of households there are social tenants. Lavender’s figure for flats in converted houses is 43.3%, and private renters make up 46.6%. Northcote, between the two commons, is 49.3% terraced houses, a higher share than any other Wandsworth ward. A home in Northcote is therefore most likely a house with stairs and a landing, while in Lavender it is more likely a rented conversion flat, where the sofa in a furnished let can be cleaned with the carpets: £57 for two seats and £26 a seat after that (more on the sofa cleaning page). From 1 April 2026 Northcote landlords need a selective licence; Lavender and Falconbrook are outside that scheme. The Clapham Junction conservation area, designated in May 1989 and enlarged in 2009, is built around the Victorian and Edwardian shopping terraces of St John’s Road, three and four storeys tall. If your flat is above one of those shops, tell us how its stair is reached from the street.
Carpet cleaning in Putney
Along Putney Embankment, garden walls also hold back the river. Ruvigny Mansions has its entrances raised up behind a rendered wall, and the terrace at the Festing Road corner is level with the street, so it has a flood wall of brick and concrete in front. Steps up to a raised entrance mean every machine is lifted by hand, so even a ground-floor flat there involves a carry. West Putney became a conservation area in 1986, with an extension in 1987. It starts among the Georgian and Victorian streets of the town centre and carries on into an Edwardian suburb on what were fields, and the council’s appraisal treats it as six separate character areas. Across the three Putney wards 48.4% of households own their home. If you mean to keep a carpet for years, stain protection at £33 a room makes a spill sit on top of the fibres for a little while, so there is time to blot it. Putney High Street is zone A1, controlled from 8.30am until 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, and its bays allow one or two hours; on weekdays stretches of Lower Richmond Road are for permit holders only between 9.30am and 10.30am. East and West Putney wards joined selective licensing in April 2026; Thamesfield did not.
Carpet cleaning in Tooting
Totterdown Fields, on streets including Lessingham Avenue and Franciscan Road, was the London County Council’s earliest cottage estate: 1,261 cottages over 38 acres between 1901 and 1911, mostly yellow stock brick and two storeys high. A number were divided into two flats, one downstairs and one up. If yours is the upper half, its stair is priced as a full flight at £41, or as a short flight at £29 if it is only a few steps. Terraced houses hold 31.7% of households across Tooting Bec, Tooting Broadway and Trinity wards. From 1 July 2025 every private let in Tooting Bec and Tooting Broadway has needed a selective licence, while Trinity, the ward with Tooting Bec station in it, has none. Parking depends on the street. Tooting High Street is red route; its E1 and E2 bays allow up to four hours and are controlled Monday to Saturday from 9.30am until 5.30pm. Some E1 bays on Garratt Lane give eight hours on the same days, and the council also lists eight hour bays near St George’s Hospital, which suit a whole-house carpet cleaning visit with the sofa added.
Carpet cleaning in Balham
Balham has a high share of converted-house flats: 34.4% of households in Balham and South Balham wards. Between Balham and Tooting Bec Common, the Heaver Estate conservation area keeps Alfred Heaver’s red brick houses and flats in a Queen Anne style, built roughly between 1890 and 1910, with carved brickwork, tiled paths in tessellated patterns and cast iron gates. Du Cane Court on Balham High Road is the opposite: an Art Deco block of 676 flats ranging from studios to penthouses with four bedrooms, the largest private block of flats in Europe when it opened in the 1930s. A studio there may have one carpeted room, below the one-off minimum of £67, so add a mattress or the sofa to the same visit. Red route covers most of Balham High Road. Bays in zones H1, H2 and H3 are controlled on weekdays from 9.30am until 5.30pm, and on Saturdays on some stretches, with four hours as the limit, and some blocks of flats on the road are outside the CPZ altogether. South Balham ward has had selective licensing from 1 July 2025; Balham ward has none.
Carpet cleaning in Wandsworth Town
Wandsworth Town is among the borough’s oldest settlements. Its conservation area, designated in September 1984 and extended in 1989, still shows the brewing trade in its pubs and in small workers’ cottages, with merchants’ villas on the edges. Around the Tonsleys, near Wandsworth Town station, the Old York Road conservation area (June 2019) is mostly small terraced houses packed closely together and built between the late 1870s and the 1890s. A cottage that size may have a steep, narrow stair, and the cleaner does each step by hand: £41 a flight, or £4 a step for a few odd ones. The Grade II* Ram Brewery buildings now sit within the redeveloped brewery site, and former industrial land, including the gasworks site and the Wandle Delta, is being redeveloped as well. Where a new flat has wood or tiles in the living room, a hard floor can be cleaned at £6 a square metre (hard floor cleaning) while the cleaner is there for the bedroom carpets. On the High Street, zones W1 and W2 are controlled on weekdays only, 9.30am until 4.30pm, with stays of two or four hours; Old York Road is W1 too, with a two hour limit.
Carpet cleaning in Earlsfield
Most of Earlsfield is Victorian terraces, built once the station on Garratt Lane had opened in April 1884. The high street sits between Garratt Lane, Burntwood Lane and Allfarthing Lane, with the River Wandle running roughly beside Garratt Lane. On the SW18 side of Wandsworth Common the ‘Toast Rack’ streets have bigger Victorian houses, semi-detached and detached. A house of that size may have more than one flight and two or three landings, and a large rug in a front room is £51, cleaned on the spot (rug cleaning). Half the households in Wandle and Wandsworth Common wards own their home (49.4%). L1 and L2 are controlled on weekdays from 9.30am until 4.30pm, with a four hour maximum stay; part of L2 also has a permit-holders-only hour, 10.30am until 11.30am. Along Garratt Lane most bays are pay and display only, one hour at a time, Monday to Saturday between 10am and 4pm, and permits do not work in them. For carpet cleaning in a flat on Garratt Lane, a visitor permit in a side street bay is the practical answer. Neither ward has selective licensing.
Carpet cleaning in Southfields
The ‘Grid’ is Southfields’ set of parallel streets. Approval for it came on 23 December 1891 from the London County Council, and the Grid was effectively finished by mid 1906, with 1,766 houses, maisonettes and shops in all. An upstairs maisonette in the Grid may have its own stair from the front door, so expect £41 for its flight plus £9 for the landing before any room is counted. Allen and Norris built a private estate of almost identical terraces between 1910 and 1920 on Wimbledon Park Road and on Wincanton, Hambledon and Gatwick Roads, now the Wimbledon Park Road conservation area. The houses are red brick, with gables at the front, square bays faced in clay tiles and deep porches held up by polished granite columns. Long curtains in one of those square bays can be cleaned in place at £42 a pair. Parking is easy for a short carpet cleaning job in the one-hour zones. Elsenham Street and parts of Merton Road and Replingham Road, in sub-zones S2 and S3, are kept for permit holders between 1.30pm and 2.30pm on weekdays and have no pay and display bays, and a visitor permit from the resident covers that single hour. Southfields and West Hill wards have no selective licensing.
Carpet cleaning in Nine Elms
Almost every household in Nine Elms (97.6%) is in a purpose-built flat. Private renters are 58.4% of households, with another 7.6% in shared ownership. Sir Giles Gilbert Scott designed Battersea Power Station, built from 1932 and now listed Grade II*. It reopened in October 2022 with 254 flats within its walls, and Frank Gehry and Foster + Partners designed new blocks around it on the 42 acre site. On the riverside are Chelsea Bridge Wharf and Embassy Gardens (up to 1,982 homes planned), while Carey Gardens and the Savona are the two big council estates. If your flat has carpet in the bedrooms only, carpet cleaning there means the bedrooms, a rug on the living room floor and perhaps the sofa. Parking needs a check first. The council warns that a new development is often excluded from its CPZ, so residents may not qualify for on-street permits, and then the cleaner uses pay and display or a car park; ask your building where a visitor can unload. Part of Nine Elms, the tube station included, is in Lambeth.
Questions about carpet cleaning in Wandsworth
Which Wandsworth wards need a selective licence for a private let?
Seven of them. South Balham, Tooting Broadway, Furzedown and Tooting Bec came into selective licensing on 1 July 2025. Northcote, West Putney and East Putney followed on 1 April 2026, in a designation that ends on 31 March 2031. Elsewhere, a let to one household requires no licence from the council, though a shared home may need an HMO licence under the borough-wide additional scheme.
Can the carpet cleaner use one of my visitor permits?
Yes, as long as your home is in a controlled zone. Visitor permits go only to residents. They come as scratch cards or paperless, and work only in the zone printed on them, not in a car park, a private road or a housing estate. Where a zone is controlled for a single hour a day, residents who hold a parking permit receive ten one-hour visitor permits a year without charge, which is usually enough for a carpet cleaning visit.
My block is outside the CPZ. Where does the cleaner park?
Pay and display, or a car park nearby. New housing developments in Wandsworth are often excluded from the controlled zones, and so are some blocks on Balham High Road, which means the residents may have no visitor permits to give. You can check your address in the council’s parking controls search. The cleaner’s parking is added at cost and stops at £40.
Can I book just one rug in a Wandsworth flat?
Yes, though one-off work starts at £67 and a small rug at £35 is below that. Adding a bedroom carpet or the sofa takes the visit past the minimum.
