Carpet cleaning in Hammersmith and Fulham is mostly stairs and bedrooms, because so many homes are Victorian terraces or flats made from them: £41 buys a full flight cleaned and £36 a bedroom.
This is an old borough. Valuation Office counts for March 2025 put the number of homes at 95,070, and more than half of them (55.7%) went up before 1919; 48.1% are older than 1900. Only about one home in six (16.3%) dates from 2000 or later. Many of those old houses now hold more than one household. At the 2021 Census, flats housed three households in every four, and roughly a quarter of all households (24.5%) were in a house split into flats or shared, while 18.8% still had a whole terrace to themselves.
That makes for two common kinds of booking in W6, W12 and SW6. One is the whole house: hall, a flight or two of stairs, the landings and then the bedrooms. The other is a flat on the upper floors of a converted house, where the machine goes up the shared stair in the cleaner’s hands and work starts at your front door. Carpets get hot water extraction, often called steam cleaning, from a portable machine brought into each room.
Old staircases and converted houses in Hammersmith and Fulham
The council has designated 44 conservation areas, taking in about half the borough. Older houses can have a staircase turning at a half landing, a short flight down to a back extension or a step between rooms, and each is priced as it is. A full flight is £41, a short one £29, a single carpeted step £4 and a landing £9. The cleaner does the stairs one at a time with a hand tool, tread and riser, before taking the main wand into the rooms.
In a converted house the common stair is shared by every flat in it, and the freeholder or the residents together decide whether to book it. Inside your own flat a living room is £43, and where the front and back rooms have become one, that is a through lounge at £61. Expect the carpets to stay damp for a few hours; heating on in cold weather and an open window at any time of year both speed it up.
Landlord licensing and tenant changeovers in Hammersmith and Fulham
Private renters made up 36.4% of households in 2021, social renters 29.8%, owners 32.1% and shared owners another 1.5%. Rented carpets get cleaned when one tenant goes and before the next arrives. When the cleaner is already there for an end of tenancy clean, a bedroom carpet comes down to £29 and the living room to £36; the mattress left for the incoming tenant is £35.
The council renewed its landlord licensing from 5 June 2022 for five years, so the present schemes end on 4 June 2027. Every street in the borough is covered by additional HMO licensing, which catches a home once three people from two households or more share it. Selective licensing for ordinary lets was cut back from 128 streets to 24, among them Wood Lane, Uxbridge Road, North End Road, King Street, Goldhawk Road and Fulham Road. In a licensed shared house the changeover tends to involve each bedroom carpet, the hall and stairs inside the front door and the sofa in the shared living room.
Parking for a carpet cleaner in Hammersmith and Fulham
Residents of a controlled parking zone have the simplest option: a visitor session for the cleaner’s car, booked through RingGo. The permit costs nothing, the hourly charge rises with the car’s CO2 band, and it is valid only in your own zone, where most zones allow up to five visitors at a time. Controlled hours differ widely, from 9am to 5pm on weekdays in many zones to 8.30am until 11pm every day in zones A, B, C and E, and outside them parking is free.
A tradesperson can also park on an all-day trader permit, which anyone may buy for work at a local resident’s or business’s address. It covers shared-use bays at or close to that address, 9am to 5pm on weekdays, for one vehicle, with no promise of a space. We pass on what the cleaner pays to park, and the most it can come to is £40.
Carpet cleaning in Hammersmith
In and around Hammersmith centre are conservation areas such as St Peter’s Square, The Mall, Hammersmith Grove and Ravenscourt & Starch Green. In the three wards counted here, roughly 20% of households live in a terrace and nearly three quarters in flats, so carpet cleaning in Hammersmith is more often a flat than a house with stairs.
King Street, Dalling Road, Talgarth Road, Shepherd’s Bush Road and Goldhawk Road are selective licensing streets, where a private let needs a licence until the scheme ends in June 2027, and a landlord there can book the carpets and a mattress clean together when a tenant leaves. Getting here from the south is the other thing to know. Hammersmith Bridge closed completely in 2020 after micro-fractures were found, and its main deck opened again in April 2025 to walkers, cyclists, wheelchair users and e-scooter riders only. A cleaner coming by car from across the river uses another bridge. One more check: some W6 addresses are in Chiswick Homefields, a Hounslow ward, and follow Hounslow’s parking rules.
Carpet cleaning in Fulham
Fulham has more houses than most of the borough. Across its five wards a quarter of households (25.7%) have a terraced house and 38.8% own their home, and its conservation areas include Bishops Park, Hurlingham, Moore Park and Walham Grove. A family house here usually means the full set of stairs, landing and bedrooms, plus a sofa that has seen children and pets. A two-seater is £57, and stain protection at £13 a seat, put on once the fabric is clean, holds a spill up on the surface for long enough to blot it, though a spill left sitting will still mark.
Plan round Craven Cottage. On event days the controls start at 9am and last until 10pm in zone T and until 9.30pm in X and Y, and that includes Sundays and bank holidays, while pay and display stays are cut to two hours (zone T) or one hour (X and Y). A whole-house carpet clean in those zones goes better on a day with no fixture, when controls run 9am to 5pm. Fulham Road, North End Road, Dawes Road and Crookham Road are selective licensing streets.
Carpet cleaning in Shepherd’s Bush
West of the Green, much of the housing is late 19th century terraces three or four storeys high, and many are now divided into small flats. Three in ten households in these wards (30.0%) live in a converted or shared house. The highest flat in a terrace like that is two or three flights of shared stair up, so give the floor when you book. In a small flat the work is often a bedroom, a living room and a sofa, and our carpet cleaners can do the mattress on the same visit.
Parking round the Green is tight: zone G controls apply from 9am to 10pm on every day of the year except Christmas Day and Easter Sunday, two hours is the longest pay and display stay, and only permit holders may use any bay from 6.30pm to 8pm. Two hours can be tight for a carpet visit, so book the cleaner a visitor session if you hold a resident’s permit. Uxbridge Road, Askew Road, Coningham Road, Lime Grove, Bloemfontein Road and Woodstock Grove are all selective licensing streets. The Grampians on Shepherds Bush Road, numbered 1 to 175, is now Grade II listed; give the flat number as well as the building when you book.
Carpet cleaning in White City
White City has three very different kinds of home. Five storeys high, the White City Estate is a council estate built partly in the late 1930s and partly after the war, with streets named after the countries shown at the exhibitions the site once hosted. The Old Oak & Wormholt conservation area holds two older estates. On the Old Oak Estate the London County Council put up 1,056 homes in two phases, 1912 to 1913 and again from 1920 to 1923, chiefly little red brick cottages on two floors; Hammersmith Borough Council planned the Wormholt Estate from 1919 as a garden city layout. A cottage of that size is a compact booking: one staircase, at £29 if it is short, and bedrooms at £36.
The newest homes are at the former BBC Television Centre on Wood Lane, a Grade II listed building that the BBC sold in 2012 and left in 2013, now redeveloped with flats among offices, a cinema and hotels. Flats like these often have hard floors and a rug or two, and rug cleaning is £35 up to 3 sq m. On the estates, give us the block name and the floor, and the cleaner can plan the carry before arriving.
Carpet cleaning in Parsons Green
Parsons Green & Sandford has more terraced houses, as a share, than any other ward in the borough: 43.6% of households live in a terrace and 49.3% own their home, against 18.8% and 32.1% across Hammersmith and Fulham. The Studdridge Street conservation area, designated in August 1975, is mostly terraces put up from 1888 by the Irish builder James Nichols, with wide streets, bigger front gardens than usual and terracotta lion finials; plainer artisan cottages of the 1880s line Sandilands Road.
A deeper front garden means a longer walk from gate to door, and the hall carpet takes whatever comes in on shoes. So in a terrace here, the hall, stairs and landing are the carpets to book first, with the bedrooms after. In the Parsons Green conservation area an Article 4 direction applies to houses in Favart Road, Musgrave Crescent, Tyrawley Road and Blake Gardens, and estate agent boards are banned in part of the area. If you are selling a house here, have the carpet cleaning done before the first viewing.
Carpet cleaning in Sands End
Sands End is one of the borough’s newest corners. Valuation Office counts for 2025 show that 55.9% of its homes were built from 2000 onwards, against 28.8% from before 1919, and the Census put 61.7% of households in purpose-built flats, with 4.6% in shared ownership. The new building includes Imperial Wharf, on the old Imperial Gasworks site, where a station opened on 27 September 2009 because the area had no Underground.
A riverside flat of that age often has hard floors with rugs and a large sofa. The rugs stay where they are for cleaning, and so do fabric sofas. A leather sofa has its price set on a call, after the cleaner has asked whether it is aniline, semi-aniline, pigmented or suede. The ward runs along the Thames as far as Chelsea Harbour Pier, and the SW10 district is shared with Kensington and Chelsea, so send the full postcode with your carpet cleaning booking and the cleaner will check which council’s parking applies.
Carpet cleaning in Brook Green
Victorian townhouses on tree-lined streets make up most of Brook Green, with Blythe Road and Shepherd’s Bush Road as its shopping streets. Around the green itself most buildings are three storeys, along with two late Victorian red brick mansion blocks: Phoenix Lodge Mansions, four storeys high, and Queen’s Mansions at No. 12, built in 1896 with four storeys and an attic and now locally listed. Those blocks mean carrying the machine up several floors, so ask your managing agent whether there is a lift the cleaner can use before the day.
Of the neighbourhoods on this page, Brook Green has the highest share of flats in converted houses (31.9%), and 43.7% of households rent privately. Both shopping streets are on the list of 24, so a landlord letting on Shepherd’s Bush Road or Blythe Road has to hold a selective licence until June 2027. If a townhouse has long curtains, curtain cleaning fits into the carpet cleaning visit, cleaned in the house at £42 a pair.
Questions about carpet cleaning in Hammersmith and Fulham
Can I book a visitor parking session for the carpet cleaner?
Yes, if you live in one of Hammersmith and Fulham’s controlled parking zones. Book a RingGo visitor session for the cleaner’s car: the permit is free, the hourly charge depends on the car’s CO2 band and it only works in your own zone. Otherwise the cleaner uses pay and display or an all-day trader permit, and whatever is paid is billed at what it cost, never above £40.
Should I avoid a Fulham match day?
If you live in zones T, X or Y near Craven Cottage, yes. On event days pay and display is limited to an hour in X and Y and two in T, with controls running into the evening on Sundays and bank holidays too. A carpet clean usually takes longer than that, so choose a day with no fixture.
Is every W6 or SW10 address in Hammersmith and Fulham?
No. Part of W6 lies in Hounslow’s Chiswick Homefields ward, and SW10 also covers part of Kensington and Chelsea, so the parking rules outside your door may be another council’s. Tell us the whole postcode and the cleaner looks up the rules for your street before setting off.
When do the Hammersmith and Fulham landlord licences run out?
The current schemes began on 5 June 2022 and last five years, to 4 June 2027. HMO licensing covers shared homes on every street, and selective licensing covers ordinary lets on 24 named streets, including King Street, Fulham Road and Uxbridge Road. At a changeover, carpets cleaned with an end of tenancy clean cost £36 for the living room and £29 per bedroom.
