Semi-detached houses are Harrow’s commonest home, so carpet cleaning here usually starts with the hall, the stairs (£41) and the landing (£9), and only then the bedrooms at £36 each.
Harrow’s Local Plan for 2021 to 2041 puts almost two thirds of the borough’s homes in the inter-war years, when the Metroland estates spread semi-detached houses and short terraces across farmland. The Census of 2021 shows the result. Of 89,642 households, 37.1% lived in a semi, more than in any other type of home, 16.9% in a terrace and 11.3% in a detached house. Flats held 34.6%, about three quarters of those in purpose-built blocks.
A house built in the 1930s has a staircase in the middle of daily life. Everyone goes up and down it, school shoes and all, and the carpet on the treads and the landing usually looks tired well before the bedrooms do. That is why the stairs sit near the top of the list below.
Carpet prices for a three-bedroom Harrow semi
This is the usual set of carpeted areas in an inter-war semi, with the price for each. Leave out anything that has boards or tiles, and add a box room if the house has one.
| Area | Price |
|---|---|
| Entrance hall | £22 |
| Stairs, ground to first floor | £41 |
| Landing | £9 |
| Each of three bedrooms | £36 |
| Box room over the hall | £29 |
| Front and back rooms knocked into one | £61 |
| Front room on its own | £43 |
The cleaner pre-treats the marks, then runs the hot water extraction machine over the pile, the process most people call steam carpet cleaning. A thorough vacuum the day before helps, since dry grit comes out far more easily before any water goes down. Furniture a person can lift alone is moved; beds and wardrobes are worked round. The full list of rooms, from conservatories to kitchen-diners, is on the carpet cleaning prices page.
Visitor permits for the cleaner in Harrow
The cleaner comes by car and carries the machine and hoses in from the kerb, so where the car can stop matters. If you live in a Harrow controlled parking zone, the council sells residents virtual visitor permits for a whole day, up to 100 in a year, and its own page suggests them for a decorator or a repair person. A carpet cleaner fits that description. There is also a book of ten scratch-card permits if you prefer paper. Harrow does not publish zone hours as a list: they are printed on the signs where you drive into each zone, and on the council’s zone map, and the usual rules still apply on bank holidays. Council estate car parks run their own permit zones, H1 to H5. Any bay charge the cleaner pays is passed on at the amount paid, with £40 as the ceiling.
Carpet cleaning in Harrow on the Hill
The hilltop village grew up around the 11th-century St Mary’s Church, but across the ward as a whole most homes are flats: 60.3% of households, and 48.5% in purpose-built blocks alone. A flat in a block makes for a short carpet list, often a living room at £43, a bedroom or two and a hall, and the machine rides up in the lift. Eight of the borough’s 30 conservation areas lie inside this ward, among them the Village, Harrow Park, Mount Park Estate and Sudbury Hill, and the houses inside them tend to be older ones with a full staircase to clean. Private renting stands at 36.8%. The ward is outside the selective licensing scheme, though Greenhill and Marlborough, the town-centre wards just north, have needed a licence for every private let since 6 July 2026. For a dining set, chair cleaning is £13 a chair, done at the table where it stands, alongside the carpet cleaning.
Carpet cleaning in Pinner
Pinner grew fast between 1923 and 1939, when garden estates encouraged by the Metropolitan Railway spread out around the old village; one of them, Pinnerwood, is now protected. Many homes from those years are Art Deco, and the best known, Elm Park Court on the corner of West End Lane and Elm Park Road, is Grade II listed. Pinner ward’s conservation areas include the High Street, Waxwell Lane, Moss Lane and the Pinner Hill Estate. With 71.8% of households owning their home, and neither Pinner nor Pinner South ward under selective licensing, carpet cleaning here is more likely to be for the owner’s own house than for a change of tenant. If the sofa in the front room is leather, a leather sofa clean is priced over the phone after the cleaner has heard what kind of leather it is, or whether it is suede or nubuck.
Carpet cleaning in Stanmore
Stanmore runs from listed Victorian buildings to a housing estate on a former RAF site. The Stanmore Hill, Old Church Lane, Little Common and Kerry Avenue conservation areas are in Stanmore ward, Canons Park Estate is next door in Canons ward, and Stanmore Hall on Wood Lane, a gothic castle from the 1840s, is Grade II* listed. At the other end of the timeline, the RAF Stanmore Park site closed in 1997 and is now a housing estate. Across the two wards 40.8% of households are in flats, and 36.5% in purpose-built blocks. Where a ground floor is open-plan, the carpet goes by area, £3 for each square metre. In newer homes with wood or tiled floors the job is often a rug, which stays flat where it lies for rug cleaning: £35 when it measures 3 square metres or under, £51 when it is bigger. When you book carpet cleaning for a flat in one of Stanmore’s blocks, give the floor and say whether there is a lift.
Carpet cleaning in Wealdstone
The middle of Wealdstone is largely terraced houses from the Victorian and Edwardian years, with newer flats along the High Street and George Gange Way, the bypass finished in 1996. Parking here changed this year. From 5 January 2026 Harrow stretched Zone C, around the Wealdstone Royal Estate, from one weekday hour (10am to 11am) to every day except Sunday from 8am to 6.30pm, under an experimental order linked to Eastman Village and the old Civic Centre site, which together will bring about 3,100 homes. A carpet clean on any day but Sunday now falls inside the zone’s hours, so have a visitor permit ready. Private renting is 37.4%, and both Wealdstone wards came under selective licensing on 1 September 2026 for five years. When a tenancy ends, a landlord can add the carpets to an end of tenancy clean; bedroom carpets then cost £29 each and the living room £36. Harrow’s only recycling centre is on Forward Drive, too, if an old rug is beyond carpet cleaning; car visits must be booked first.
Carpet cleaning in Rayners Lane
Rayners Lane is Harrow Garden Village, laid out in the 1930s by E.S. Reid on garden suburb lines. It was the biggest building scheme in the Pinner area, and most of it was cheap terraced housing. That still shows: at the 2021 Census 49.0% of households in Rayners Lane ward lived in a terrace, the highest share in Harrow, and only 16.1% in flats. A 1930s terrace often has a compact plan, so the small third bedroom is priced as a box room at £29, and the stairs and landing come to £41 and £9. Ward boundaries shifted in 2020, and the Garden Village streets north of the station now count as Pinner South. Neither ward is in the selective licensing scheme. The shopping parades either side of the station became a conservation area in October 2002, and the Art Deco former Ace cinema there is Grade II* listed. For carpet cleaning on a parade flat, mention the stairs from the street door when you book.
Carpet cleaning in Harrow Weald
Harrow Weald is a 1930s suburb with the ancient woodland of Harrow Weald Common along its northern edge. A house next to a common gets mud carried in on boots and paws, and it gathers on the hall carpet (£22) and the bottom of the stairs. Dried mud mostly comes out with a thorough vacuum the day before, and what remains in the pile usually lifts with hot water extraction. The ward’s conservation areas include one covering Brookshill Drive and the Grimsdyke Estate, and one at West Drive. Social renting is 18.0% of households and private renting 23.2%; the ward is outside selective licensing, even though Wealdstone North next door came under it on 1 September 2026. A dog that sleeps on the sofa or an armchair leaves hair and grease on the arms and seat backs. Upholstery cleaning covers that at £33 an armchair, after the fabric has been checked.
Carpet cleaning in South Harrow
South Harrow was farmland until the late 19th century, and the last of its fields had gone under housing by the middle of the 20th. Northolt Road is the high street, with the station at its northern end. Harrow has no ward called South Harrow; the area is Roxeth and Roxbourne wards, and the station’s own postcode falls just inside Harrow on the Hill. For landlords the split matters. Roxeth’s selective licensing began on 2 May 2026 and lasts five years, and Roxbourne has none, so two lets a few streets apart can fall under different rules. Roxbourne also had the highest share of social renting in Harrow in 2021, 31.3% of households. Carpet cleaning is the same job on either side of the boundary: pre-treatment of marks, the extraction clean, then a few hours’ drying, quicker with the radiators on.
Questions about carpet cleaning in Harrow
My Harrow flat is a Permit Restricted Property. Where will the cleaner park?
Permit Restricted Properties, usually flats in newer developments where a planning condition rules out street permits, cannot get resident or visitor permits from Harrow. The cleaner therefore has to use a paid bay or a street with no restrictions. Tell us when you book, and the cleaner will look for the nearest option; whatever is paid is charged to you at the price paid, with a ceiling of £40.
Which Harrow wards need a selective licence for a rented home?
Six: Edgware and Roxeth from 2 May 2026, Greenhill and Marlborough from 6 July 2026, and Wealdstone North and Wealdstone South from 1 September 2026, each for five years. The old additional HMO licence lapsed on 5 August 2026; its replacement, for three or four sharers from at least two households, starts on 6 January 2027. None of this changes how the carpets are cleaned, and landlords between tenants can book carpets and the move-out clean together.
Will Harrow’s bulky waste service take an old carpet?
Yes. Harrow takes up to four bulky items from a household once in any 12 months without charge, and a carpet must be rolled up and no longer than five feet; any further collection is charged. Before you roll it, look at the marks. A carpet that is just grey along the walkways usually comes back with a clean, while bleach spots, iron burns and dye that has run from a rug will stay whatever is done.
